Oak Side Table by Mark Lane, 1961

Wonderful side table in oak, fully restored, four legs and two plates, it has the signature of the firm and it's exact date of manufacture.

In March 1912, a man named John Lane bought a box plant in Altavista, Virginia. His son, Ed Lane, was 21 at the time and little experience in manufacturing. Ed was encouraged by his father to try to launch a factory boxes in the newly acquired factory.

The Lane family did not know the success of his new business, which is why she did not start by affixing his name. Instead, they incorporated small business under the name Standard Red Cedar Chest Company, with John Lane as chairman and Ed Lane as vice president and general manager.

From chests Cedar Lane has spread to side tables in 1951, the furniture in 1956 and extra furniture in 1965.

In 1972, Lane bought a small company recliners in Tupelo, Mississippi, named Action Industries.
Action has grown considerably through market share gains and diversification of it's products over the next 20 years, becoming a major force in the upholstered furniture industry.

Finally, Action has changed it's name to Lane Furniture. Today, Lane is owned by United Furniture Industries, one of the largest manufacturers of upholstered furniture and case goods in the United States, the fastest growth.

Characterized by it's sleek style and build quality, Lane Furniture is an iconic American brand since 1912.
