Biography of the artist :

Sculptor

(1914-1998)

Josep Busquets was a Catalan sculptor who studied in Valls.

Like many young people of his generation, he was conscripted into the Republican army to take part in the Civil War and then returned to Valls to continue his work as a sculptor.

In 1943 he held his first exhibition in Barcelona, which was acclaimed by the critics.

In 1945, he exhibited at the Reig Gallery in Barcelona and, together with other sculptors, founded the Maillol Circle at the French Institute in Barcelona. In 1953, he was awarded the Julio Antonio medal by the Province of Tarragona.

In 1953, he exhibited in Madrid and was very successful.

Busquetes' sculptures are about the female figure, they are compact, strong and respond to the idea of a woman of the earth, with massive arms and feet and a firm chest.

There is also a certain form of primitivism or archaism in his sculptures, especially in the treatment of the eyes and hair.

Valls has numerous outdoor sculptures, the two most important being the altarpiece in the Church of San Juan, on which he worked for seven years, and the monument to the Xiquets horsemen of Valls.
