This full-size, four-panel screen displays intricate geometrical designs, crafted with fine pieces of wood and mortise-and-tenon joints. At the centre of each panel is an intricate scalloped-shaped carving depicting four female figures in outdoor settings, each holding a scroll and a traditional Chinese 'pipa' a lute-like instrument. The bottom panels feature engraved inscriptions, and the top panels boast a flowing floral pattern.
This beautiful elm wood screen from mid nineteenth century Jiangsu is ideal for creating flexible, private spaces in a home. Its size is suitable for a bedroom, and it can also be used as an attractive room divider. The dimensions displayed are for each of the four panels.
