About This Piece

Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer', pen and ink on paper, by Genevieve Gallibert (circa 1930s). Like her famous French counterpart, Yves Brayer, Gallibert was also known for her artworks depicting the landscapes, wildlife and people of the Camargue region of the South of France, near Arles. She painted this tranquil scene from the capital of the Camargue, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is particularly lively in summer with its visitors, beaches, cafés, restaurants and shops. In winter, another atmosphere prevails with its long and deserted sandy beaches, the sea air, and the gentle breaking of the waves. Every May, Romanies, Manouches, Tziganes and Gitans come from the four corners of Europe to venerate their Saint, the Black Sara. They camp on the streets, on the squares, on the beach. For ten days, they are at home. This piece is in fair overall condition showing areas of discolouration and fade (see pics). The artwork is in its original frame. About the Artist : Genevieve Gallibert (1888-1978) was a French artist, painter, illustrator, engraver, water-colourist best known for her paintings which often depicted scenes from everyday life and nature. She was particularly skilled at depicting the natural world, and many of her paintings featured flowers, trees, and landscapes. Gallibert was the official painter of the French Air Ministry and was the widow of Louis Hirschauer (1885-1939), Doctor of Law, head of the Aeronautical Collections department and co-creator of the Aeronautical Museum. Genevieve Gallibert passed away in 1978, leaving behind a legacy as a talented and respected artist. Her work continues to be exhibited and admired by art lovers around the world.
