About This Piece

The standing Buddha, carved in solid wood on its lotiform base, Burma, early Mandalay period, mid-19th century. The posture is natural, his serene face shows a slight smile. The eyes are made of glass for the sake of realism. The wood is lacquered and gilded, richly decorated with inclusions of glass beads, the Awakened One holds his monastic robe (uttarasanga) in his left hand. He holds the myrobalan fruit in his right hand, an allusion to the healing power of Buddha. Provenance: Estate of the merchant and collector Claude de Marteau. Sold with certificate of provenance H 122 cm x L 55 cm x D 15 cm Without the square base: H 107 cm A crack on the side of the dress as well as a small loss on the hand (normal wear, restoration of era): The price has been adjusted.
