This intricately carved panel, from Nanjing, Jiangsu province and dating back to 1860, is part of an antique daybed. It forms the back rail, with similar rails at either side. Expertly crafted, the panel displays a beautiful relief carving with a classic scene of court visitors at the center. When combined with the two side rails, the three rails depict a noteworthy episode from Chinese history. The intricate craftsmanship of the panels, all hand-carved, is remarkable. The skill of the master craftsman is seen in the delicate features of the figures and their robes, and the detailed backdrop of a palace, trees, and mountains.
