This intricately carved panel once made up one of the side rails of a 19th-century Chinese daybed, originating from Nanjing, Jiangsu. The central part, in particular, boasts impressive detailing depicting figures in a regal setting. Considering the full scene, portrayed on this daybed along with its other side and larger back rail, it tells a grand narrative from ancient China.
The panels of the daybed are masterfully crafted by hand, exhibiting remarkable detail in everything from the characters' facial expressions to the roof tiles and flooring. Months of artistry and effort went into the creation of this daybed, likely by a skilled artisan for a highly-valued customer. Now, it makes a stunning decorative wall feature.
