Antique Venetian Wrought Iron Lantern with Stained Glass Disks

Vintage Design

This is a late 20th century Italian wrought iron lantern with its multicolored stained round glass. Each disk is unique, hand-blown and hand-colored. The lanterns probably originated from the Venetian island of Murano with its beginnings since the 13th century. The beacon would generally be placed in an indoor or outdoor hallway. The light source would have been by candle but today is powered by electricity. This design is of a malleable wrought iron which was hammered, rolled or otherwise worked while hot enough to expel molten slag, to become delicate like twists of ribbons. The blacksmithing techniques give the material its peculiar fibrous and crafted structure.

The lantern can be connected flush to the ceiling or lowered on a chain provided. The lantern now has a single light bulb inserted and has been rewired to European and US standard. There are two similar lanterns available. The last image shows the second available lantern.
